Seems like Ukraines biggest push to join NATO was AFTER Russia TOOK Crimea.
  • 2008: Ukraine formally requested the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP).
  • 2010: The process stalled under President Yanukovich, who did not support a NATO relationship.
  • 2014-present: Following the Revolution of Dignity and the Russian annexation of Crimea, Ukraine has re-emphasized its NATO aspirations.
  • 2017: Ukraine amended its constitution to include NATO membership as a strategic goal.
  • 2022: Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, President Zelenskyy formally requested an accelerated accession to NATO.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, a central event in the Russo-Ukrainian War, has been fueled by concerns about Ukraine's potential NATO membership. Russia views Ukraine joining NATO as a threat, and has previously demanded that Ukraine not be allowed to join. While NATO leaders have maintained that Ukraine's future is within the alliance, the war has highlighted the significant opposition to NATO membership from Russia.
